Barcelona event draws crowds with on-site testing

A Barcelona nightclub hosted an event with nearly 500 people in attendance without any Covid-19 infection among the attendees, thanks to a rapid Covid-19 test that can be performed in 15 minutes. Everyone present at the event was required to test negative immediately before entering the club where alcohol was permitted.

The nightclub where the event took place safely is located just five kilometers from the Fira de Barcelona, the Gran Via exhibition venue, where ISE is due to take place in June, though an in-person version of the more major trade fair for the audiovisual industry is taking place as planned.

The PRIMA-CoV event, which took place in the 1,600-seat Sala Apolo hall in Barcelona, was a clinical trial conducted by the Primavera Sound Festival, the Fight AIDS and Infectious Diseases Foundation and the German University Hospital Trias i Pujol .

The musical event took place on December 12 and all participants were required to sign an informed consent form, were between the ages of 18 and 59, had no existing serious illness, did not live with “previous family contacts” and had not been diagnosed with Covid-19 in the past 14 days. The test performed was a SARS-CoV-2 antigen test, with nose and throat swabs taken by health workers.

Inside the hall, drinks were only served in an additional hall and event attendees were asked to remove the N-95 masks they received at the entrance only when drinking . No physical distance was required in the club’s concert hall where singing and dancing were permitted. The nightclub event, featuring two DJ sessions and two live band performances, lasted five hours in all, with the average time spent by attendees inside the concert being two hours and 40 minutes. .

In the UK, event management support company Swallow Events has announced its partnership with healthcare company Roche to offer a rapid Covid-19 testing service for the event industry. The tests, which meet the standards set by the Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Agency and which Swallow Events say does not offer false negatives, will be available through a contextual testing service or worldwide shipping. and can be used in conjunction with other Covid-safe practices. such as monitoring and tracking data collection and temperature checks.
